Instructor Biographies

Ian Mindell
Name: Ian Mindell, Director of Tennis
Hometown: Winnipeg, Canada
What brought him to TD: “The opportunity to direct Tahoe Donner’s tennis programs.”
Favorite thing to do in TD or favorite season/amenity at TD and why: “Besides playing tennis, I love the bike trails and rock climbing areas all around the Tahoe Donner area.”
Background: “I started teaching tennis 20+ years ago in the Palm Springs area. I have worked at La Quinta Resort since 2001 and at Tahoe Donner since 2008. My wife and three children have called the Tahoe area our Summer home since 2005 and we always look forward to our time together at the beaches, lakes, playgrounds, trails, restaurants, shops and all of the other wonderful things that Tahoe Donner and the surrounding areas have to offer.”
Sasha
Name: Sasha Chuckovich, Head Pro
Hometown: Belgrade, Serbia
What brought him to TD: “A chance to spend some time in the mountains and to teach the sport I love.”
Favorite thing to do in TD or favorite season/amenity at TD and why: “I am a tennis pro so my favorite thing to do is play tennis.”
Background: “I started playing tennis at the age of 6 and started competing in junior tennis tournaments at the age of 9. Overall winner of 12 national junior tournaments, including national 16 and under doubles champion of former Yugoslavia. I ran the Intersport Public Tennis Academy in Belgrade with more than 400 kids of all ages and skill sets. One of the top players that came from the Academy was Janko Tipsarevic, formerly ranked #8 in the world. I moved to USA in March 2000 and worked as a Tennis Professional for last 15 years in the Palm Desert area.”
Name: Markus Vorwald, Instructor
Hometown: La Quinta, California
What brought him to TD: "While working with Ian at the La Quinta Tennis Resort, he told me how passionate people are about tennis in TD. So it was an easy decision to make; I think I’ll feel right at home."
Favorite thing to do in TD or favorite season/amenity at TD and why: "I love to spend my free time with my family, enjoying the outdoors. I like to relax on the beach or play a round of golf in a beautiful environment."
Background: He started his tennis career at a young age, played competitively in tournaments in Germany and around Europe and later provided coaching for kids, adults and semi-professionals. He has extensive knowledge in preventing sports injury through personal experience and working side by side with physical therapists for his students.
Henry Ryerson
Name: Henry Ryerson, Tennis Coach/Instructor
Hometown: Bridgewater, Connecticut
What brought him to TD: “I was introduced to TD as the head coach of the Truckee High Girls Tennis team. We have been lucky to be able to practice and play at this amazing facility. As a local pro looking to help the growth of the tennis community, I am glad to be affiliated with TD.”
Favorite thing to do in TD or favorite season/amenity at TD and why: “My favorite things to do are spend time with my 5 year old, Lily, and my fiancé, Holly.”
Background: “I played singles and doubles for WCSU. After that I taught tennis for Silver Springs Country Club and Four Seasons Racquet Club in Connecticut. Also a PSIA level 3 ski instructor, the mountains called me west. Here I run a summer seasonal youth tennis program through Truckee park and Rec. dept. As well, I am currently the head coach for the Truckee High girls tennis Team. I feel blessed to be able to ski and play tennis in this beautiful area.”
Name: Jim Wolavka, Instructor
Hometown: Michigan City, Indiana
What brought him to TD: “To teach in a beautiful climate.”
Favorite thing to do in TD or favorite season/amenity at TD and why: “Driving around the lake and eating at different restaurants.”
Background: USPTA since 1984; LaGrange CC, Chicago, 1985-2004; Laquinta Resort, 1998-present;1989 USPTA Illinois Pro of Year.
