Vegetative Waste Management

Vegetative Waste Management

Town of Truckee Yard Waste Program

The Town of Truckee Yard Waste Collection Program has several year-round options.

Green Bags

To participate, purchase green bags from a local retailer or member services and fill them with vegetative yard waste. Tie the bags securely and place them on the curbside for collection, Duct tape works well to seal bags. Bags must be 4 millimeters thick. Please limit each bag to a maximum weight of 40 pounds. Bags must be free of holes.

Tahoe Truckee Sierra Disposal Company will pick up four bags a week on Tuesdays. If you place more than four bags out per week, Tahoe Truckee Sierra Disposal Company will not pick up any of the bags, but will remove them all at once if you call them and pay an additional fee.

Accepted Items include:

  • Pine needles
  • Pinecones
  • Lawn trimmings
  • Garden waste
  • Brush
  • Small twigs and branches
  • Wood chips and bark

Non-eligible items:

  • Large limbs or branches
  • Food waste
  • Pet waste
  • Rocks and dirt

Green bags are available at Mountain Hardware, Tahoe Supply Company and at the Member Services Office.

Yard Waste Dumpster

Last summer, Truckee residents were able to purchase up to two 6-yard capacity, yard waste only dumpsters for an extremely low cost. Dumpsters are intended to be loaded with loose yard waste material, which means no bags, and less time and effort! Dumpsters also accommodate larger woody materials such as limbs and branches in addition to pine needles, pine cones, brush and garden waste. Though not confirmed, this program is anticipated to be offered again for summer 2017. Call Tahoe Truckee Sierra Disposal at 530-583-7800 for additional details.

Self-Haul

Also last year, Truckee residents who had the means to self-haul yard waste material to the Eastern Regional Landfill (ERL) were allowed to drop off up to six yards of yard waste for free between May 1 and October 31, 2016. Again, bags were not required. Residents need to unload their material themselves once at ERL. In order to take advantage of the free drop-off, Truckee residents were required to bring proof of residency (something with a Truckee address – utility bill, drivers license, etc.). ERL is located just thee miles past the mouse hole tunnel on Highway 89 and up Cabin Creek Road. Though not confirmed, free drop-off is anticipated to be offered again in 2017.
