The town of Truckee recently announced upcoming improvements to trash and recycling services in order to promote sustainable practices including reducing the use of plastic bags. The Town’s current solid waste agreement with Tahoe Truckee Sierra Disposal expires June 30, 2018. The new agreement includes significant changes to residential services. We hope these FAQs will help clarify the upcoming changes.

  • Yard Waste: Green bags will NOT be accepted after June 30, 2018. Each household can opt-in to receive up to (3) 96-gallon green yard waste carts.

What is the last day of green bag pick up?

The last day that green bags will be picked up in Tahoe Donner is June 26.


How many green bags can be picked up each week?

You can have up to 4 bags picked up each week until June 26. If you have more than 4 bags out, none will be picked up.


What do I tie the green bags with?

Bags need to be shut tightly with no loose ends. You can tie the bags from corner to corner, use a zip tie, or use tape. If there are any holes with pine needles or pine cones falling out, they will not pick up the bags.


How heavy can the green bags be?

The bags have to be 40 pounds or less. If heavier than 40 pounds, they will not be picked up.


Where can I get green bags?

Member Services is currently out of green bags and will not be ordering more. You can purchase green bags at Mountain Hardware in Truckee. Mountain Hardware currently has stock in green bags, but once they run out they will not be ordering more inventory.


How do I sign up for the new green cart program?

You can opt-in or opt-out for the green waste carts through the Town of Truckee. Click here.


What are some other options getting rid of green waste other than a waste cart?

You can purchase a dumpster through the town, hire a landscaper to bring your yard waste to the local dump, or bring up to 6 yards of waste to the dump yourself.


How often can I put the green carts out?

Green carts will be picked up every other week.


Are the bear bins going away?

No, bear bins are here to stay. Weekly trash service will remain the same.


When is Tahoe Donner getting blue recycle bins?

Tahoe Donner is scheduled to receive these in 2020. These bins can be put out every other week, opposite of the green carts.


When are blue recycle bags going away?

The town is NOT getting rid of blue bags. You can continue to use these for your recycling each week.
