Join the Trails, Forestry and Land Management Department in their ongoing efforts to maintain the Tahoe Donner Trail System. Work alongside trail crews this summer to help repair and restore existing trails or help build new ones! Stewardship Days provide the ideal opportunity to volunteer your time while enjoying the outdoors, meeting new people and giving back to the community. Early season dates are subject to change, and some events are still to be determined.

2024 STEWARDSHIP DAYS SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

WHAT TO EXPECT
REGISTRATION
Register online – advanced registration is preferred; walk-ins are welcome if space is available.
COST
Unless otherwise indicated, the cost to volunteer on Stewardship Days is free. Volunteer capacity is limited, so be sure to register in advance.
REQUIREMENTS
Volunteers should come dressed in long shirts, long pants, hats, sunglasses or other protective eyewear, work boots and gloves. Bring plenty of water, snacks, bug spray and sunscreen. Tools will be provided; however, it is recommended that you bring your own if you have shovels, a McLeod tool, hoes, loppers and more handy. Hard hats or bike helmets may be required.
COMPENSATION
High fives, new friends, exercise, complimentary drinks and snacks.
STEWARDSHIP DAYS + TOURS
NEW TRAIL SIGN INSTALLATION
June 3-July 1 (or until complete): Monday-Friday | 7AM-3:30PM
Volunteers needed to work one-on-one, helping to install new trail signs and remove old ones. Please email trails@tahoedonner.com to set up a date and time.
HAWK’S PEAK BRUSHING
Thursday, June 20 | 4-7PM
Meeting location: Hawk’s Peak Trailhead Gate on Skislope Way
Description: Help with heavy brushing on Hawk’s Peak Trail, beginning at the bottom and working uphill. Please bring your own loppers or hand saw if you have one. Pants, long sleeves, gloves and eye protection are required!
GUIDED WILDFLOWER TOUR

Description: Back by popular demand, join this guided wildflower walk led by TD member and botanist Gale Rankin. Rides provided; limited seating.
FORESTRY SITE VISIT – U.S. FOREST SERVICE ALDER CREEK THINNING PROJECT

Meeting Location: Hansel Mailboxes
Description: Guided hike along the East Perimeter Trail and surrounding U.S. Forest Service land. Please wear appropriate footwear for a walking tour.
HAWK’S PEAK BRUSHING

Meeting location: Hawk’s Peak Trailhead Gate on Skislope Way

SUNDANCE HUT – UPPER WHOOP IT UP REALIGNMENT

Meeting Location: Sundance Hut at 4PM
Description: Hike or bike up the Wildwest Uphill trail (1.25 mi from Alder Creek Adventure Center) or walk up Sundance Road from the Moondance Hut trailhead. The meeting location is at the Sundance Hut at 4PM! A small reroute and new construction will create a full loop for Wildwest Uphill and Chickadee Road. Hard hats or bike helmets are required when working.
FORESTRY SITE VISIT – LEARN ABOUT PROJECTS IN THE AREA

Meeting Location: Alder Creek Adventure Center (ACAC)
Description: Guided hiking tour around the ACAC, Big Dipper and Wildwest Uphill trail areas. Gain a complete understanding of this previously treated thinning project and learn about upcoming projects in this area.
NATURE LOOP REPAIR + RESTORATION

Meeting Location: South end of the Trout Creek Rec Center parking lot, near the Nature Loop Trailhead
Description: Help realign the connection to a safer location. We will move the connecting trail closer to the driving range and away from Northwoods Boulevard. Hard hats or bike helmets are required.
FORESTRY SITE VISIT – GLACIER WAY THINNING PROJECT

Description: Guided hike and discussion of Glacier Way thinning project. Please wear appropriate footwear for a walking tour.
EDUCATIONAL TOUR
Saturday, Aug. 31 | 9-11:30AM
Description: Gain understanding and insight on this private guided tour of the Coyote Crossing bridge and boardwalk project. Bus rides will be provided with limited seating. This tour will make several stops along Euer Valley to discuss the history of the Euer Family and to view the old homestead and dairy cow milking site.
This tour will involve walking, sometimes on uneven terrain. Due to staging areas for the construction project, the bus will not be available to drive right to the job site. An approximately half-mile walk will be required to reach the destination. The road is flat and smooth gravel.
