Tahoe Donner Fire Mitigation Work

Tahoe Donner Fire Mitigation Work

Trails

As part of its fire mitigation efforts, NV Energy is working in collaboration with local fire agencies to conduct vegetation management work, including mastication along its power lines. From July-October 2022, crews will be working on the powerline that intersects with the Tahoe Donner trail system from the northeast side of Lion’s Leap through the southwest side of Far Side which may impact trail openings. Affected trails may include:

  • Lion’s Leap
  • True Grit
  • Cinnamon Twist
  • Sundance Cutoff
  • EQ Wild West
  • Whoop It Up
  • Lower Crazy Horse
  • Upper Crazy Horse
  • Andromeda
  • Hawk’s Peak Trail
  • Drifter Wall
  • Sunrise Bowl Trail
  • Far Side
  • Donner Lake Rim Trail

Watch for closure signs and please use caution when in the area. At this time, no power outages are anticipated with this maintenance.

WHAT IS MASTICATION?
Mastication is a fuel reduction treatment method used in forest management to help reduce wildfire risk. Machinery masticates, or chews, woody vegetation, which falls in a thick layer onto the ground. This layer retains moisture, so any fires in the area burn more slowly and don’t climb as high. Mastication also allows for more space between trees which creates additional drainage. To learn more about land management practices implemented for fire safety, click here.

PLEASE KEEP THE FOLLOWING IN MIND:

  • Stay clear of work areas if you are walking or hiking in the area
  • Traffic may be limited intermittently in some areas depending on the work
  • You might hear mastication and other large machinery in action
  • There are no power outages anticipated with this maintenance

NV Energy appreciates your patience as crews work to protect the public and the environment from increased risk of wildfires.
