Bear Safety Tips
Association News, FeaturedThere’s something magical about Lake Tahoe in springtime. As the snow starts to melt and the flowers start to bloom, you can’t help but want to spend more time outside. But we’re not the only ones. Bears are coming out of hibernation, and they’re looking for food. Bears have been known to be very active at Tahoe Donner facilities, including swimming in the Trout Creek pool, breaking into Alder Creek Adventure Center, and even wandering onto the playground at Northwoods Clubhouse. To keep yourselves and the bears safe, here are a few tips to keep in mind.
BEAR PREVENTION TIPS
The best defense is a good offense, so do your best to avoid encounters. You can do this by:
- Ensure all trash cans are secure or in the garage at all times, and wash out recycling
- Ensure your windows and doors are locked in the evenings to prevent overnight bear break-ins (both to your home AND your car)
- Avoid leaving food in vehicles
- If camping, keep all food in a bear canister overnight and don’t leave food sitting out at the campsite during the day

BEAR ENCOUNTER TIPS
Black bear encounters in California rarely lead to injury. However, bear behavior can be unpredictable. Please observe the following guidelines if you encounter a black bear:
- Keep your distance! Never approach a bear, especially when it is eating.
- If you see a bear but it doesn’t see you, slowly back away in the direction you came. Do not run.
- If the bear does see you, try to make yourself big! Wave your arms above your head and make a lot of noise.
- If you see a bear inside a building, find a safe location and call 911 for assistance.
- Alert any other people in the area not to enter the building until it is clear.
