The popular Glacier Way trailhead offers a jumping-off point for exploring the ridgeline above Donner Lake and connecting into the robust Tahoe Donner Trail System and Donner Lake Rim Trail. Ideal for hiking, biking and snowshoeing, the area offers stunning views of the lake and surrounding Sierra Nevada. As of July 2025, the trailhead was enhanced to include additional parking spaces and a permanent restroom facility. But, more recently, a project is underway to create an even more inclusive and immersive experience.

Entering the construction phase, a new half-mile-long, five-foot-wide loop will be installed this summer. This new trail will be comprised of decomposed granite material compacted into a firm and flat surface for leisurely walking and to accommodate strollers and other adaptive devices to support mobility. The trail will feature vistas and educational signage highlighting local flora, fauna and other unique facts. Four picnic tables will be added, two at the trailhead and two along the path, as well as two benches for quiet enjoyment. There will also be passing areas and rest zones for anyone wanting to take a tranquil pause along their walk.
Working with the Truckee River Watershed Council, Tahoe Donner Trails Manager Leslie Loveland will meet with members of the Washoe Tribe to learn about and incorporate their early history with the land into the interpretive signage. Project completion is anticipated for early August. In all, the Glacier Way Interpretive Loop will provide a uniquely experiential component for Tahoe Donner residents and visitors to enjoy.
