Reducing tree density around homes and on properties is encouraged.  However, permits are required from the Forestry Department.

Tree removal permits are required for :

  • Trees larger than 4 inches in diameter measured at 3 feet off the ground, dead or alive.
  • Native coniferous trees such as pine and fir trees. Landscaped trees and aspens do not require a tree permit.
  • Dead or storm-damaged trees.
  • Green limbs are over 15 feet off the ground, and dead limbs are over 35 feet off the ground.

For a list of vendors who perform tree and brush removal services, see Truckee Fire Protection District’s list of approved service providers.

You will receive an email notification prompting you to open your inspection report that will serve as your Tree Permit. Important: Although the report emailed to you is labeled a “Defensible Space Inspection” – it is NOT a Defensible Space inspection—it serves as your Tree Removal Permit auto-generated by our inspection software.
