USFS + Tahoe Donner Forest Resiliency Project + Trail Closures
Forestry, Member News, TrailsSep 26, 2025
The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) is launching a major effort to mitigate fire hazards and risks on land that backs up to Tahoe Donner in the Alder Creek corridor near the East Perimeter Trail (see map below). During the same timeframe, forestry crews will also be working on the adjacent Tahoe Donner Common Area land to maximize resources, minimize neighborhood disturbance and reduce fire risk on association-owned property.
The U.S. Forest Service is prioritizing the zones nearest the Tahoe Donner subdivision for the most significant community protection. This project has been in the planning phase for several years and has secured enough funding to move forward in this region.
- Forestry work, including saw and machinery operation, may occur as early as October 5 to October 31 from 6:30AM to 4PM.
- Trucking to haul trees will occur for a period of approximately 10 days towards the end of October from the hours of 4AM to 2PM.
PROJECT IMPACTS
- Long-term Landscape Benefit: This area will look substantially different as the USFS creates a significant fuels reduction zone designed to slow the spread in the event of a fire and reduce forest overgrowth. This work is consistent with other fuel reduction projects in the area including Sawtooth, 89 South, Glenshire. See project details in the links below.
- Short-term Impact: Trucks and heavy machinery will be removing trees and brush near the area. There will be temporary noise and area safety hazards from the forestry work during the project.
- Fall Trail Closures: The East Perimeter trail between Hillside and Schussing will be closed for much of the fall. Members should check the live trail map for closures. Please abide by any trail closures, as there will be significant tree removal and hazards. USFS may have intermittent closures of the Alder Creek Trail in this area.
- Hansel Mailboxes: Parking will be limited, trail access will be closed.
